Gatineau in brief
Gatineau faces Ottawa across the Ottawa River and anchors Quebec's Outaouais as part of the National Capital Region. Algonquin peoples lived here long before Philemon Wright founded Hull in 1800 at the Chaudière Falls portage.
Wright's agricultural hopes soon gave way to the Ottawa River timber trade; the settlement later incorporated as Hull in 1875. The larger City of Gatineau took shape in the 2002 amalgamation. In Gatineau Park, Pink Lake stays oddly blue-green thanks to chemistry that keeps its layers from mixing.
