L'Industrie finds a new name

Joliette in brief

Joliette sits about 50 km northeast of Montreal on the L'Assomption River and seats the Regional County Municipality of Joliette. Barthélemy Joliette and Marie-Charlotte de Lanaudière founded it in 1823 as L'Industrie, planned around mills and lasting riverside commerce.

The city incorporated in 1863 and took the founder's name. Today it also houses the Musée d'art de Joliette, whose permanent collection runs past 8,300 works spanning paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and medieval French art.
