Cowansville

When Nelsonville became Cowansville

Cowansville in brief

Cowansville sits on Lac Davignon in the Eastern Townships, about 20 km north of the U.S. border and seat of Brome-Missisquoi. Jacob Ruiter settled first, built a flour mill and sawmill around 1800, and in 1805 called the place Nelsonville after Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Montreal merchant Peter Cowan arrived in 1836, became postmaster in 1841, and renamed the town so mail would not wander to another Nelsonville near Hamilton. The South Eastern Railway and the Eastern Townships Bank in the 1870s sped growth; the municipality incorporated as Cowansville in 1876 and became a city in 1931.
