Baie-Comeau hugs the St. Lawrence in Côte-Nord, near the mouth of the Manicouagan River. Vieux-Poste began with an 1889 Eudist mission; the Jalbert brothers ran the region's first sawmill there until a timber raft washed out in 1907.
The modern town rose in 1936 around a Chicago Tribune paper mill built for Colonel Robert R. McCormick, with power and housing under Arthur A. Schmon. Hydro dams, a 1958 aluminum smelter, and Canada's largest grain elevators followed. Hauterive merged in for 1983. Nearby, the Daniel-Johnson Dam and ring-shaped Lake Manicouagan mark the crater reservoir that feeds the region's power story.
