Alma in brief

Alma sits where Lac Saint-Jean spills toward the Saguenay, about 175 km north of Quebec City. The oldest piece, St-Joseph-d'Alma, was planted in 1867 by Damase Boulanger and named for the Crimean War Battle of the Alma.

Hydro power on the Grande-Décharge, a Price paper mill, and an Alcan aluminum smelter turned the shore into an industrial hub in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1962 four villages (Isle-Maligne, Naudville, Riverbend, and St-Joseph d'Alma) fused into today's town; Delisle joined in 2002.

A short drive away, Val-Jalbert stands as an abandoned company town once powered by a waterfall paper mill: a ready side trip for anyone tracing Lac-Saint-Jean industry.
