Granby in brief

Granby is the second-largest city in the Eastern Townships after Sherbrooke and the seat of La Haute-Yamaska. The township took its name from John Manners, Marquess of Granby, after Loyalist colonization opened the region in 1792.

John Horner arrived in 1813 and put a sawmill on the Yamaska River; by 1825 he and Richard Frost added a general store and an official plan. A dam from 1815 helped create Lac Boivin. Granby Zoo and that lakeside fountain remain local landmarks, and the town and township merged in 2007.
