Quebec
Second city of New France
Trois-Rivières stands at the Saint-Maurice and St. Lawrence confluence, halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. Algonquin and Abenaki peoples used the spot for summer camps; Cartier noted it in 1535, and the French name for the river's three channels dates to 1599.
Sieur de Laviolette founded the permanent settlement on 4 July 1634, making it New France's second city after Quebec. Fur trade and a regional government seat followed. Today the Old Prison offers overnight "inmate" tours, and Boréalis occupies the site of what was once the world's largest paper mill.
