Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts in brief

Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts borders Lac des Sables in the Laurentians, about 80 km northwest of Montreal. Families arrived from 1849 on land opened by Augustin-Norbert Morin, and French Catholic settlers poured in through the 1850s.

The railway reached town in 1892 and sparked spa and hospital growth; doctors then believed mountain air helped lung disease. Wealthy Montreal and American families built lakeside homes, and from the 1950s through the 1980s big resort hotels made Sainte-Agathe a favourite Laurentian getaway.
