Laval in brief

Laval fills Île Jésus north of Montreal, Quebec's third-largest city and the province's largest suburb. Jesuits received a seigneury here in 1636; François de Montmorency-Laval took control in 1675, and a parish dedicated to Saint-François de Sales formed in 1702.

Farm villages grew for centuries until 20th-century suburbs raced across the island. In 1965 the government fused the whole island into a single City of Laval, named for that first bishop of Quebec, turning fourteen former municipalities into one metro neighbour.
