Victoriaville in brief

Victoriaville sits on the Nicolet River in Centre-du-Québec's Bois-Francs. Abenaki knew the area as Arthabaska, "place of bulrushes and reeds." Fur trader John Gregory claimed land in 1802; settlers arrived from about 1825, and the parish of Saint-Christophe d'Arthabaska formed in 1851.

The municipality, named for Queen Victoria, dates to 1861 and became a town in 1890. In 1993 Arthabaska, Saint-Victoire-d'Arthabaska, and Victoriaville merged under the Victoriaville name. Hardwood furniture, caskets, and hockey sticks still define the local craft reputation.
