Val-d'Or in brief
Val-d'Or means "Valley of Gold" in French (Algonquin: Ozawaconia Odena) and sits in Abitibi-Témiscamingue near La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. Prospectors found gold here in 1923; copper, zinc, and lead later joined the dig.
The City of Gold and the mining village of Bourlamaque became historic sites in 1979. Hockey fans know the QMJHL Foreurs and their dynamite-themed mascot Dynamit, a nod to the explosives that once drove the mines.
