Thetford Mines

White gold in the Appalachians

Thetford Mines in brief

Thetford Mines sits in the Appalachians south of Quebec City as seat of Les Appalaches RCM. After big asbestos finds, a village formed in 1876, incorporated as Kingsville in 1892, and took the township name Thetford in 1905.

For decades it billed itself the asbestos capital of Canada, with seven mines and thousands of workers. Major strikes shook 1949 and 1975. The last mine closed in 2012; manufacturing now leads, and the 1878 railway station houses the Mine Museum as the town's oldest surviving building.
