Sorel-Tracy in brief

Sorel-Tracy marks where the Richelieu meets the St. Lawrence at Lac Saint-Pierre. In 1642 Governor Montmagny built Fort Richelieu against Iroquois raids; the Carignan-Salières Regiment rebuilt it in 1665.

Pierre de Saurel received the seigneury in 1672, giving Sorel its name; Tracy recalls Lieutenant General Alexander de Prouville, Sieur de Tracy. Sorel ranks among Quebec's oldest cities. The modern municipality joined Sorel and Tracy in a voluntary merger in March 2000.
