Shawinigan

Power town on the Saint-Maurice

Shawinigan in brief

Shawinigan climbs the Saint-Maurice River in Mauricie at the first great falls. A Jesuit named Buteaux reached them in 1651; lumber and farms ruled until hydro entrepreneurs arrived in the late 1890s.

Shawinigan Water Power Company planners laid out a grid in 1899. The village of Shawinigan Falls incorporated in 1901 and became a town in 1902, soon claiming Canadian firsts in aluminum, carborundum, and electric street lighting. The shorter name Shawinigan stuck after 1958.
