Salaberry-de-Valleyfield in brief

Salaberry-de-Valleyfield sits in Beauharnois-Salaberry among rivers, canals, and Lake St. Francis, earning the nickname "The Venice of Quebec." Settlers reached Pointe-du-Lac in 1798; the place later answered to Saranac and Sainte-Cécile.

In 1874 the city took its dual name from War of 1812 colonel Charles de Salaberry and from Scotland's Valleyfield Mills paper works. An F4 tornado tore through in 1888. Downtown remains a draw, and nearby towns joined in the 2002 merger.
