Sainte-Marie in brief

Sainte-Marie seats La Nouvelle-Beauce on the Chaudière River, about 59 km southeast of Quebec City. Thomas-Jacques Taschereau received the seigneurie of Sainte-Marie-de-la-Nouvelle-Beauce in 1736 and named it for his wife, Marie-Claire de Fleury de La Gorgendière.

The parish began in 1737 and the municipality in 1845. As population grew, pieces spun off into neighbouring parishes; village and parish governments later reunited, and the shortened name Sainte-Marie stuck after 1959.
