Saguenay in brief
Saguenay stretches along the Saguenay River about 200 km north of Quebec City. The modern city formed on 18 February 2002 by merging Chicoutimi, Jonquière, La Baie, Laterrière, and nearby municipalities.
Chicoutimi began as a French fur post in 1676; Peter McLeod's 1842 sawmill and 1845 municipality launched the timber town, later a pulp powerhouse. Local memory of the 1996 flood lives on in the Pyramide des Ha! Ha! and La Petite Maison Blanche, while barber-turned-painter Arthur Villeneuve left a whole house covered in folk art.

Saguenay is a city in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada, on the Saguenay River, about 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Quebec City by overland route.
It was formed in 2002 by merging the cities of Chicoutimi and Jonquière and the town of La Baie.
Chicoutimi was founded by French colonists in 1676.
It is about 126 kilometres (78 mi) upriver and northwest of Tadoussac, located at the confluence with the St. Lawrence River.
