Rouyn-Noranda in brief
Rouyn-Noranda wraps Osisko Lake in Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Rouyn sprang up after copper was found in 1917 and took its name from Jean-Baptiste Rouyn, a captain under Montcalm. Noranda (from "North Canada") grew around the Horne mine and foundry.
Both places became cities in 1926 and merged in 1986. Since 1966 the twin towns have served as regional capital, and since 1983 they host Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
