Rivière-du-Loup in brief
Rivière-du-Loup faces the Saint Lawrence on the south shore and seats its regional county in Bas-Saint-Laurent. The name means Wolf's River, possibly from a people called Les Loups or from seals (loup-marin) once common at the mouth.
Sieur Charles-Aubert de la Chesnaye opened a seigneurie here in 1673. The village incorporated as Fraserville in 1850 for settler Alexander Fraser, became a city in 1910, and took back Rivière-du-Loup in 1919.
