Rimouski in brief
Rimouski sits in Bas-Saint-Laurent at the mouth of the Rimouski River, about 300 km downriver from Quebec City. Sir René Lepage de Ste-Claire founded the seigneurie in 1696 after swapping Île d'Orléans land for the Rimouski grant.
On 6 May 1950, La nuit rouge destroyed 319 houses when fire leapt the river from a Price Brothers yard; no one died. Today the city hosts UQAR and ocean-science labs, and a memorial marks victims of the 1914 Empress of Ireland sinking.
