Matane in brief
Matane stands on the Gaspé Peninsula where the Matane River meets the Saint Lawrence. Champlain noted the spot in 1603; Rochelais traders wintered here in 1616, swapping European goods for Mi'kmaq furs. A seignory grant to Mathieu D'Amours in 1672 opened settlement.
Parish and village life under Saint-Jérôme-de-Matane gave way to City of Matane status in 1937. After World War II, locals pushed regular ferries to the north shore (1962) and a rail ferry (1978). Petit-Matane and neighbouring parishes joined the town in 2001.
