Saskatoon in brief
Saskatoon straddles a bend in the South Saskatchewan River and is the province's largest city. Toronto temperance reformers won land here in 1882, and settlers led by John Neilson Lake arrived the next year hoping for a dry prairie town far from Toronto taverns.
The Barr Colonists later camped nearby and helped spark an early boom. Today bridges stitch both banks into one hub, while Wanuskewin National Historic Site just outside town reminds visitors that Northern Plains peoples gathered in this valley for roughly 6,000 years before any colony prospectus.
