Estevan in brief
Estevan sits on the Souris River about 16 km north of the U.S. border. Settlers arrived with the CPR in 1892, and the name comes from George Stephen's telegraphic address. Stephen was the railway's first president, so the town literally wired itself into prairie rail history.
It became a village in 1899, a town in 1906, and a city in 1957 once the population cleared Saskatchewan's 5,000-person bar. Coal, clay, and later lignite power kept the lights on. The 1931 Estevan Riot, when striking Bienfait miners met RCMP downtown, remains a hard chapter locals still teach.
