North Battleford

Across the river from Battleford

North Battleford in brief

North Battleford faces the older town of Battleford across the North Saskatchewan River. Together they are The Battlefords, a Yellowhead Highway stop in west-central Saskatchewan and the province's seventh-largest city on the north bank.

Cree, Blackfoot, and Assiniboine nations contested the valley long before French traders built Eagle Hills Fort in 1778. The modern city rose as the railway and farm boom shifted weight north of the river. The Western Development Museum's local branch still puts pioneer machinery and prairie agriculture front and centre.
