Moose Jaw sits on the Moose Jaw River 77 km west of Regina, where Cree and Assiniboine winters once favoured the sheltered Missouri Coteau. The CPR picked the confluence with Thunder Creek in 1881 for locomotive water, settlement began in 1882, and city status arrived in 1903.

Moose Javians still argue whether the name means warm breezes by the river or a moose-jaw bend in the stream. Either way, CFB Moose Jaw trains NATO pilots and hosts the Snowbirds, while Mac the Moose guards the visitor centre and the Tunnels of Moose Jaw sell Prohibition-era lore under the sidewalks.
