Fredericton in brief
Fredericton spreads along the Saint John River, known to Wolastoqiyik people as the Wolastoq. Archaeology points to camps here 12,000 years ago, and French colonists later planted Fort Nashwaak as an Acadian capital on the north bank.
Loyalists rebuilt the site after 1783, and the city became New Brunswick's capital. Today about 79,000 people live in the urban core, with the river still doing the heavy scenic lifting and campus life filling the flats between bridges.

The city is situated in the west-central portion of the province along the Saint John River, also known by its Indigenous name of Wolastoq, which flows west to east as it bisects the city.
The river is the dominant natural feature of the area.
One of the main urban centres in New Brunswick, as of 2026, according to the city's update on building development, it has a population of approximately 79,000 with the metropolitan population in 2025 estimated at 125,303.
