Edmundston in brief
Edmundston occupies the Madawaska highland where the Madawaska River meets the Saint John. Wolastoqiyik people camped and gathered here for generations, and by the late 1700s a major Wolastoqey village near the falls had become a refuge for other Wabanaki peoples.
The border spat known as the Aroostook War of 1839 put this corner on British and American maps. The city, named for Sir Edmund Walker Head, dates its civic start to 1850 and still wraps around the Madawaska First Nation reserve at St. Basile. French is everyday speech in a town that feels half New Brunswick, half neighbour across the river.
