Miramichi

River mouth, Irish capital

Miramichi in brief

Miramichi is northern New Brunswick's largest city, sitting where the Miramichi River meets Miramichi Bay. Mi'kmaq travellers treated Beaubears Island, at the fork of the Northwest and Main Southwest branches, as a natural meeting point.

Nicolas Denys built Fort Fronsac on the river about 1648 as an Acadian trade post. Shipbuilding, lumber, and later pulp towns grew along both banks until amalgamation created one city. Locals still bill Miramichi as the Irish Capital of Canada, and the long valley remains second only to the Saint John among provincial river systems.
