Bathurst looks over Nepisiguit Bay on Chaleur Bay, right where the Nepisiguit River reaches salt water. Mi'kmaq families kept a summer community called Nepisiguit here long before Europeans mapped the shore.
Jacques Cartier named Baie des Chaleurs in 1534, and French settlers arrived in the 1600s as part of Acadia. Nicolas Denys held a seigneury grant in 1636. Mining, pulp, and harbour work later built the modern city of about 12,000, still the heart of a metro area north of 31,000.

The City of Bathurst overlooks Nepisiguit Bay, which is part of Chaleur Bay, and is at the estuary of the Nepisiguit River.
