Restigouche's last naval fight
Campbellton sits on the Restigouche River across from Pointe-à-la-Croix, Quebec. French traders set up a fishing and fur post with the Mi'gmaq around 1700, and more settlers arrived after Louisbourg fell in 1758.
In 1760 the Battle of the Restigouche closed the naval fight between Britain and France for North America right in these waters. The place cycled through names from Wisiamkik to Martin's Point before settling on Campbellton in 1833 for Lieutenant-Governor Sir Archibald Campbell. Town status came in 1889 and city status in 1958, with forestry and tourism still paying many bills.
