East Kootenay hub that beat Fort Steele to the rails
Ktunaxa peoples lived on the land Colonel James Baker later bought and named Cranbrook after his hometown in Kent, England. Baker convinced the Canadian Pacific Railway to run the Crowsnest Pass line through Cranbrook instead of nearby Fort Steele, flipping which town would boom.
City status arrived in 1905. Mining, forestry, trades, and health care still anchor the East Kootenay's largest urban centre, and the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel keeps the CPR victory story parked downtown.
