British Columbia
Fraser Valley city with North America's oldest Sikh temple
Sto:lo Nation peoples were the first residents of the Abbotsford area, and the Sumas First Nation's Upper Sumas 6 reserve still sits at Kilgard inside city limits. Royal Engineers surveyed the valley during the 1858 Fraser gold rush and built Yale Road; former engineer John Cunningham Maclure later secured the land grant that became Abbotsford.
Farming came early, a CPR spur arrived in 1891, and the Gur Sikh Temple opened in 1911 as the oldest Sikh temple still standing in North America. Today Abbotsford is B.C.'s largest city by land area and the most populous municipality outside metro Vancouver.
