Burnaby in brief

Halkomelem- and Squamish-speaking Coast Salish nations knew Burnaby Mountain, Deer Lake, and the Brunette River long before colonial surveyors arrived. Marshlands supplied cranberries to large villages, and Burrard Inlet's second narrows figured in oral histories of conflict and defence.

Burnaby grew into a central Lower Mainland city of about 249,000, wedged between Vancouver and the Tri-Cities. Burnaby Mountain Park still looks over the inlet, and the Playground of the Gods sculpture grove sits above Simon Fraser University like a hillside surprise.
