Sto:lo homeland turned Fraser Valley farm city
Archaeology puts Sto:lo people in the Fraser Valley some 10,000 years ago, with permanent structures around Chilliwack for about 5,000 years. Gold miners passed through in the mid-1800s; farms soon clustered at landings along the Fraser, and the Township of Chilliwhack incorporated in 1873 as one of B.C.'s earliest municipalities.
The modern city sits about 100 kilometres east of Vancouver and a short drive from the Sumas-Huntingdon border crossing. Cultus Lake remains the weekend escape many locals treat like a backyard swimming hole.
