Campbell River

Salmon Capital on Discovery Passage

Campbell River in brief

Island Comox and related Coast Salish peoples lived at Campbell River before Kwakwaka'wakw migrants established Laich-kwil-tach communities here, including the Weiwaikum of the Campbell River Band. The city sits on Vancouver Island's east coast at the south end of Discovery Passage, right on the Inside Passage shipping lane.

Locals have long called it the Salmon Capital of the World, and the Tyee Club plus Discovery Pier keep that boast tied to real fishing culture. About 35,000 people live here, with Quadra Island and the Discovery Islands just across the water.
