Place between two Okanagan lakes

Penticton in brief

Syilx (Okanagan) people settled around Skaha and Okanagan lakes and used a name often rendered as a place to stay forever, tied to the year-round flow between the lakes. Irish settler Thomas Ellis arrived in 1866, built a cattle operation, and planted early fruit trees.

Penticton later hosted headquarters for the Kettle Valley Railway and grew into an Okanagan city of nearly 37,000. The sternwheeler S.S. Sicamous still sits as a museum ship, a floating souvenir of lake transport days.
