Parksville in brief

Qualicum, Snaw-naw-as (Nanoose), and Snuneymuxw peoples lived along these Vancouver Island shores for thousands of years before Spanish and British ships arrived in the 1790s. John Hirst pre-empted land on the Englishman River in 1873; a road from Nanaimo later turned The River into a proper settlement.

Parksville is famous for the wide tidal flats at Parksville Bay and Craig Bay, where low tide reveals acres of sand. Since 1982, Beachfest sand-sculpting championships have turned that beach into an open-air studio every summer.
