Oldest European settlement in mainland B.C.
Traders built Rocky Mountain Fort near here a year after Alexander Mackenzie passed through in 1793, then established Fort St. John's around 1806. After the Hudson's Bay and North West companies merged, conflict closed the post in 1823; it reopened in 1860 and later earned National Historic Site status.
Today Fort St. John sits at Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway as the Peace River Regional District's largest city. Many locals still treat the old trading-post timeline as a point of pride: European settlement here predates the rest of mainland British Columbia.
