Windsor

Canada's oldest settlement west of Montreal

Windsor in brief

Windsor faces Detroit across the Detroit River at the southwest end of the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor, Canada's southernmost major city. Anishinaabe nations called the bending river Wawiiatanong; Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Iroquois peoples lived here when Europeans arrived.

A French agricultural settlement began in 1749, making it the oldest continually inhabited European-founded community in Canada west of Montreal. Auto plants and the border crossings still set the city's pace.
