Barrie

Portage town on Kempenfelt Bay

Barrie in brief

Barrie wraps around Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, about 90 kilometres north of Toronto. Long before streets and warehouses, the Nine Mile Portage linked the bay to Fort Willow and the Nottawasaga River, a canoe route into Georgian Bay.

During the War of 1812 the British used that portage as a supply line, and the settlement grew into a depot named for Sir Robert Barrie. Today the city is an independent single-tier municipality inside the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
