Cariboo stampede town named for Chief William
Secwepemc people called the place T'exelc for thousands of years. The English name honours Chief William, whose counsel helped keep Shuswap communities from joining the Tsilhqot'in uprising. Gold Commissioner Philip Henry Nind and constable William Pinchbeck arrived in 1860 as pack trails to the Cariboo goldfields met here.
Locals still joke about Willy's Puddle, but the Williams Lake Stampede is serious business: Canada's second-largest professional rodeo after only the Calgary Stampede.
