Vernon

North Okanagan city by two lakes

Vernon in brief

Okanagan people knew the site as a jumping-over place where the creek narrows, later called Priest's Valley before settlers renamed it for Forbes George Vernon of Coldstream Ranch. Communities gathered around Okanagan Lake and Swan Lake for seasonal food long before incorporation in 1892.

Vernon is now the largest city in the North Okanagan Regional District. O'Keefe Ranch nearby keeps the cattle-and-orchard pioneer chapter open for weekend visitors.
