Trail took its name from the Dewdney Trail that passed through the Columbia River valley. Early labels included Trail Creek and Trail Creek Landing before the shorter form stuck in 1897.
Sitting about 10 kilometres north of the U.S. border in the West Kootenays, the city grew around smelting that still defines the skyline through Teck operations. The Trail Smelter arbitration with the United States even became a foundational case in transboundary pollution law.
