Terrace sits on raised benches beside the Skeena River where three valleys meet: Skeena, Kitimat, and Kitsumkalum. Municipal history starts with Tsimshian territory and the neighbouring communities of Kitsumkalum and Kitselas, then follows sternwheeler landings at places like Eby's Landing before the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway remade the valley after 1914. George Little's townsite became Terrace after Littleton was rejected, and downtown still gathers at George Little Park on Lakelse Avenue with a stage, Spirit Square, playground, and summer concerts that spill into festival season.
August belongs to Riverboat Days, the northwest's largest community festival, stretching from the BC Day weekend through a full program of Legion Parade, Beach Blast Volleyball, Concerts in the Park at Centre Stage, and Fireworks over Ferry Island. The City has even run free transit for festival weekends. Ferry Island itself is a 150-acre municipal park and campground on the Skeena a few kilometres from downtown, open to walkers year-round when the campsites are closed.
After mills thinned out, Terrace leaned into its crossroads role between Prince Rupert's port and Kitimat industry, calling itself a northwest service centre while Skeena Sawmills remains as a named forest holdout. Homepage notes still swing from Stage 3 water restrictions to fire bans, Lakelse Avenue revitalization, and centennial celebrations. Locals introduce the place with the Skeena, Riverboat Days, and three-valley geography before any brochure slogan. Thornhill across the river remains part of the everyday valley map, and Kitselas Canyon heritage tours still show up on festival weekends.
