Salmon Arm

Shuswap fruit town after the CPR

Salmon Arm in brief

Once the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived in September 1885, Salmon Arm grew from a lakeside outpost into a business street with stores, a school, and a hotel by the 1890s. Fruit harvests earned the young town a regional reputation, and citizens asked for formal local government in 1905.

It became a city in 1912, later shifted through village and district statuses, and reunited as a city again in 2005. Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip even stopped by on a 1951 royal tour, a detail still good for a smile at the museum.
