Richmond

Island city in the Fraser delta

Richmond in brief

Coast Salish bands kept seasonal camps on Lulu Island and nearby shores for fishing and berries, including sites at Garry Point, Woodward's Landing, and a Musqueam village later occupied by the Terra Nova cannery. European settlers argued over whether the Richmond name came from an Australian farm, an English hometown, or another pioneer story.

Today the city covers nearly all of Lulu Island plus Sea Island, home to Vancouver International Airport. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Steveston keeps the fishing-port chapter open for walkers on the dyke.
