Grand Trunk terminus on Kaien Island
Coast Tsimshian (Ts'msyen) occupation of Prince Rupert Harbour stretches back at least 5,000 years. Early in the twentieth century the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway chose Kaien Island over Port Simpson for its western terminus, bought reserve land, and laid out a planned port city.
Prince Rupert remains the North Coast's land, air, and water hub near the Alaska panhandle. The North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site down the inlet preserves the fishing-industry chapter in salt air and boardwalks.
