Oakville

Sixteen Mile Creek and a lakeshore town

Oakville in brief

Oakville is Halton Region's seat on Lake Ontario between Burlington and Mississauga, now Ontario's largest town by population. Dundas Street was surveyed as a military road in 1793, and British immigrants settled along the lakeshore after 1807.

The Crown bought land at the mouths of Sixteen Mile Creek and Bronte Creek from the Mississaugas, then auctioned lots that became the harbour town. That creek mouth still shapes downtown Oakville's harbour and parks.
