Ladysmith in brief

Ladysmith sits on Stz'uminus First Nation territory beside a sheltered harbour once called Oyster Harbour. James Dunsmuir founded the town around 1898 to house miners from his Extension coal works, moving buildings by rail and oxen from Extension and Wellington.

In 1900 he renamed the place after the British relief of Ladysmith in the Second Boer War. Forestry, tourism, and agriculture now share the hillside economy on Vancouver Island's 49th parallel.
