Meeting of the waters in Secwepemc country

Kamloops in brief

Kamloops takes its name from a Secwepemctsin phrase for meeting of the waters, where the North and South Thompson rivers join. David Stuart wintered with Secwepemc people in 1811; Alexander Ross and the North West Company soon planted rival posts that later merged under the Hudson's Bay Company as Fort Kamloops.

The Canadian Pacific Railway ran through downtown in 1886, Canadian National followed, and the city incorporated in 1893. It remains the commercial heart of Thompson Country, with Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park keeping the older story in view.
